"The wiki has some useful information for players but there's a lot missing, especially in-game. This means that a significant amount of important information is only known and shared by the community. This makes it quite difficult for players, especially new players. We all operate on the rules saying touch nothing, take nothing, but in reality once you've been on the server a while there are a lot of accepted exceptions.
The server would benefit greatly from more information being made available on the wiki and in-game through signs, map arts etc. Organising a team/group of people that can work on things like this might be useful."
The server is absolutely long overdue for an improvement in this area. The wiki, which is generally the most up to date, is still fairly outdated and lacking content, everywhere else is much worse.
There haven't been enough improvements since this was submitted either. There is now a 'Public Farms' directory but this is still far from where I want it to be in both content and functionality (hint: there is no functionality), and because it's so far from where it needs to be, I can't reasonably or fairly enforce the Public vs Private rule change either. This one in particular was rushed out first because the Public vs Private farm issue is a fairly big issue in in itself but it highlights a bigger issue, which was mentioned fairly perfectly in this submission "We all operate on the rules saying touch nothing, take nothing, but in reality once you've been on the server a while there are a lot of accepted exceptions".
Everyone joins the server with mostly the same expectations and understanding of the rules. But when you get hit with word of mouth information, that is 8 layers deep, and through no fault of the community, could have been incorrect from the beginning, you run into the issue where it gets extremely confusing to understand what is expected of players on the server. When a player hears that they can do 'x' thing at 'y' place on the server, even though technically it would be against the rules, a common and easy next step is assuming that they might be able to do the very same thing somewhere else, but that place happens to follow the written rule, so it's actually not allowed. Having inconsistencies like this is going to be expected on a server where there is a lot of collaboration over many years but when there are no tools for players to document and share these things, it simply falls apart. The lack of good information available on the server has significantly eroded the meaning of the rules for players, this isn't a new issue either, it's been around since before Survival 2 was created.
I'd like to add a variety of tools that allow players to add information/documentation related things to various parts of the server. I don't believe I'll go the route of assigning this to a specific group/team though, I'd like it to be something where anyone can request an addition or change and it can be approved, requested to be altered or denied with the ability for future players to continue to request changes or improve it later on. I'm gonna have to make some sort of style guide to try and keep some consistency as well. There's a lot of tools out there that let people collaborate easier and I'll be taking inspiration from them when making this. I've got a much better idea of how I want it to work than I did a couple of months ago but it's still going to be a challenge to get the right balance of user functionality, ease of use, automation and information. It's also not going to be something that can be done quickly, so for now the Google Form way will have to do while I work to add all the pieces needed in the background.
Extra
While we're on the topic of information. I've been working on a bunch of boring behind the scenes stuff that has piled up over time. Should've done it earlier but I've been making decent progress. I'm hoping I will get through most of the boring stuff and get to the more interesting things that are actually visible by the time of the next feedback form on the 1st of April.
